Sunday 11th August, 2024
This year’s championships kicked off in spectacular fashion this weekend, concluding with the Women’s and Men’s Major Singles finals on Sunday, August 11th. The club scheduled both the semi-finals and grand finals for Sundays, allowing our talented female bowlers to perform in front of the entire club—and they certainly did not disappoint. A large number of spectators witnessed the display of high-calibre bowls on both rinks, and all agreed that it was a huge success.
Now, to get down to the nuts and bolts of the finals: we had a great showdown in the Women’s final with Rhonda White up against Joy Young. This clash couldn’t have been closer unless it was staged. The ladies battled it out all the way, with the scores tied on several ends. With spectacular bowls being played, Rhonda surged ahead in the end, winning 25-22. Both ladies should be very proud of their efforts.
The Men’s final took a slightly different path, with former champion Andrew Weaver flying out of the blocks to lead William Harkins 16-4 at one stage. The crowd eagerly awaited a comeback, but Andrew maintained a comfortable margin through the teens, leading 19-6. Just when the result seemed inevitable, William kicked into gear with some pressure bowls, clawing his way back to 22-23. Andrew then showed tremendous composure to seal the win 25-22.
It was a huge day for the club, continuing the great vibe that’s been around lately.
