Castle Hill Bowling Club has a long and proud history in the sport of bowls, dating back to 1960. The club has established itself as a key contributor to the Sydney Metro North West Bowls, with a strong presence in open, women's, men's, and mid-week pennants.
The club's commitment to competitive bowling is evident in the strength of its regular club championships, which allow members to test their skills against one another. The range of events on offer ensures that there is something for everyone, and members can look forward to regular, exciting, and challenging competitions throughout the year, in both single and open gender competitions.
In addition to its competitive offerings, Castle Hill Bowling Club is also known for its welcoming and friendly atmosphere, often described as “like a country bowling club but it’s located in the city”. Members can expect a warm and supportive community where they can enjoy their favourite sport in the company of like-minded individuals. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, Castle Hill Bowling Club is the perfect place to hone your skills, make new friends and have fun.
Explore the storied past of Castle Hill Bowling Club. Founded as a bowls and community hub, this club has flourished into a symbol of friendship and competitive spirit in the heart of Sydney's northwest.
On 14th October 1960, Hal Dickinson, President of Castle Hill RSL Club, founded the Castle Hill Memorial Bowling Club with a group of like-minded RSL members keen to play lawn bowls.
Under the guidance of K.B. (Keith) Wilson, a committee was formed. They successfully negotiated a 5-year lease of the current bowling club site, which was owned by the RSL and was destined to become the current RSL club complex. The site, which initially housed an old cottage that was transformed into a clubhouse, saw the creation of two bowling greens. This was largely due to the dedicated manual labour of the members, showcasing the club's grassroots beginnings and the members' commitment.
In the 1960s, Castle Street was a dirt road leading to a few cottages overlooking a makeshift oval. In a testament to the members' financial responsibility and commitment to the club, they negotiated to purchase the land outright in 1962. The $60,000 cost was to be repaid over a 20-year period, marking a significant step towards the club's financial independence.
Members willingly signed up for Debentures and continued the strong tradition of voluntary support.
On 3rd May 1964, the President of the Royal NSW Bowling Association officially opened the Bowling Club, and the Castle Hill Women’s Bowling Club was formed.
On 10th September 1971, the club came of age as a business and became the Castle Hill Bowling Club Limited.
To this very day, the club has a proud history of volunteering. It’s important to acknowledge that, without that level of volunteering, our club would not have survived the challenges that face small clubs. In particular, we recognise the tremendous support received from each of our Life Members:

In the early 1980s, the club's financial predicament was so dire that it ran purely on voluntary labour. Then President Roy Lohman finished his usual day’s work at 3 pm and then headed to the club to open the bar for members.
Under the leadership of President John Coates, who served for 8 years, the club's financial situation took a turn for the better in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Profits were consistently banked, and the club traded profitably for many years, with a significant contribution from interest on investments. This period marked a phase of financial stability for the club.
This period really set the club up financially, such that in the early 2000s, there were sufficient funds to allow for significant renovations to the bar and external areas of the clubhouse.
However, from around 2008, the challenges of operating a small club became increasingly difficult, leading the Board in 2014 to create a “Redevelopment Subcommittee’ with the responsibility of negotiating either a redevelopment or an amalgamation that would achieve the following outcomes:
1. A new clubhouse
2. Two (2) greens with lights
3. An ongoing revenue stream to ensure the longevity of CHBC
Members of the Redevelopment Subcommittee who contributed to this important task for the period 2014-19 under Roy Potter's chairmanship included Michael Howard, Ken Sherwood, Rob Jones, Clarrie White (SNR), Paul Bryan, Paul D’Arcy, and Jeff Everett.
In 2019, the Board resolved that a small group of Directors, namely Paul Bryan, Jeff Everett and Ken Sherwood (as Club Chairman), would continue with the redevelopment negotiations with Retire Australia. In 2020, Noel Benson replaced Ken Sherwood as chairman, so he became involved in negotiations with Retire Australia and in an amalgamation opportunity that had arisen with CHRG.
In 2022, Castle Hill Bowling Club joined CHRG (Castle Hill RSL Group) through an amalgamation. This exciting development brings new opportunities for CHBC as it becomes part of a dynamic group of venues that includes Castle Hill RSL, Club Parramatta, Lynwood Golf & Country Club, and Castle Hill Fitness & Aquatic Centre.
The club is thrilled to embark on this journey with CHRG, confident that this partnership will enhance the member experience, expand community engagement, and ensure a future filled with plenty of days on the bowling greens.
