Tips for New Bowlers

The Bowl

  • Cup bowl in hand with thunb on side and fingers underneath.
  • Bowls are biased to curve inwards when they lose momentum.
  • Deliver the bowl with the small disc facing the inside of the green.
  • The small disk to the outside of your green will cause your bowl to turn the wrong way.

Scoring

  • A shot is awarded to each bowl closer to the kitty than your opponents nearest bowl.

Delivering the Bowl

  • Point feet along the aiming line.
  • Deliver the bowl from as low as possible to avoid bouncing bowls. Bowls should be delivered smoothly.
  • The bowling arm is swung backward.

Mat

  • The mat is placed at the start of the centre line for the 1st end.
  • After which the lead who's team won the last end can place it anywhere on the centre line.

Safety

  • Accident can happen with bowls at your feet or when kicking bowls back to begin a new end. Be careful !
  • Take care when stepping on or off the green.

Players job whilst bowling

  • Lead - place mat and roll kitty.
  • Second - keep scorecard and adjust scoreboard.
  • Third - assist skipper when asked and measure for shot.
  • Skipper - Add to score or get team out of trouble.
