Lawn Bowls Glossary

Green

Playing area; square flat area of grass 31-40m

Rink

Area within the green that individual matches are played.

Bank

Outside wall of ditch above green.

Ditch

Excavated area b/w edge of green and bank (usually filled with sand).

T-Piece

Is 2m from the ditch. Mat is placed here to start the game.

Rink Boundary Pegs

Pegs at each end of the green - they donate the outside boundary of the rink. The bowl can travel outside this line, but must finish inside.

Rink Numbers

Indicates the number of rinks on each green and are situated on the bank at the centre of each rink.

Jack / Kitty

The white or yellow small round ball to which bowlers aim.

Resting Toucher

A bowl that finishes resting on the jack.

Head

The area around the jack.

Lead

Places the mat, throws the jack. Aim is to place bowls near the jack.

Second

Responsible for scoring. Consolidates on the leads bowls by placing bowls in the head.

Third

Must be able to perform a variety of shots (draw, drive). Also provides direction to the skip and responsible for measuring.

Skip

A good tactitian, able to read the head and anticipate different game scenarios. Provides direction to follow team members and bowls the final bowls of the end.
